More Than Flowers: The Real Memorial Day Promise

More Than Flowers: The Real Memorial Day Promise

On Memorial Day, we place flowers and fold flags. We speak of honor and sacrifice. We remember the men and women who gave their lives fighting for democracy and freedom.

But here's what we're not saying: Have we become a country that deserves what they gave?

Those soldiers didn't die for strongman fantasies or billionaire keyboard warriors who mistake cruelty for patriotism. They didn't die so democracy could become an outdated idea that gets dismantled in front of our eyes.  They died for their country, their flag, and the idea for which it stands—a system where power belongs to people, not dictators or oligarchs.

The United States of America is about Democracy. Not the performance of it. The practice of it. The daily work of listening, deliberating, holding leaders accountable. It's built on a foundation that cracks when we stop maintaining it.

Right now, that foundation is cracking. What’s happening in 2025 isn't the usual push and pull of politics. This is something else. We are witnessing a deliberate dismantling disguised as patriotism. This isn’t about “polarization” or “both sides.” This is a story about the USA coming under attack from anti-democracy elements inside of our own country — and our own government.

These are challenging and scary times. The survival of our democracy will require action and courage from all of us. This era will test our commitment to democracy. Will we stand up, or let it slip away?

Memorial Day is a good time to remember what’s at stake. Our fallen didn't sacrifice their lives for our comfort with false equivalencies. They died for the messy, imperfect, essential work of self-governance. That work doesn't happen automatically. It happens because citizens choose to do it, even when it's hard, especially when it's hard.

Donald Trump once referred to dead American soldiers as “suckers” and “losers.” Today, he wished the nation a “HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY” and then launched his usual whining attacks on his political opponents..

But Memorial Day is not about barbeque, beer, or presidential bellyaching. If Memorial Day means anything, it means this: We owe our fallen soldiers more than flowers. We owe them vigilance. We owe them the courage to call lies what they are and to defend democracy not just from foreign enemies, but from the rot that grows when we look away.

They kept the faith. Now we have to keep the country. Democracy isn’t inherited. It’s earned—every generation, every time.

Take Action

Ready to defend democracy? Join a “No Kings” protest on June 14 — the same day Trump will hold a dictator-like military parade to celebrate his own birthday. From the No Kings website:

On June 14—Flag Day—Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else.

No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance. From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like.

We’re not gathering to feed his ego. We’re building a movement that leaves him behind.

The flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it.

On June 14th, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings.
